A brief introduction
About Me

I am a member of the Institute of Transactional Analysis (ITA), a member organisation of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). As well as being in ongoing personal therapy myself (and have been for the past four years) I am also in regular therapy supervision. I have lived in Edinburgh for the past eleven years and am in my fourth (and final) year of formal training as a psychotherapist.
Having set myself up in private practice, I've been working with individual clients, groups and couples since 2008, and have experience of offering support to clients with a range of issues, including problems surrounding depression, confidence, sexuality, eating disorders, anxiety, relationship troubles, career concerns and more.
As a young, male practitioner, I’m keen to confront the popular stereotype of counsellors and therapists as either bearded middle-aged men in corduroy and cardigans, or middle-aged women with chunky knit jumpers, tie-dyed skirts and handmade jewellery. (Though I do quite like wearing corduroy.) I also seek to challenge the image of therapy as being about long, impersonal silences and harsh questioning - I believe the therapy room can support a wide range of contemporary issues, and I seek to handle them with respect, commitment, humour and personality.
It was my own experience of counselling which drew me to train as a therapist. I believe that many people can benefit from undertaking work in a counselling or therapy setting, to resolve issues from their past which may still be impacting current situations or relationships, and forming a strong therapeutic relationship is key making this a successful process. Each client bring their own unique experiences into the room, and this requires a committed, personal response from me as the therapist.
Ultimately I consider my role in the therapy room to be about supporting clients effectively as they work towards increased personal awareness, heightened spontaneity in daily life, and a more authentic, intimate way of interacting with others.
Last summer I took part in Antony Gormley's One and Other art project in London - find out more about what I did during my time on the 'fourth plinth' here.
See What is TA? for more information about the specific therapeutic modality I work within, and please contact me with any queries.
Towards awareness, spontaneity and intimacy.
